What exactly is a Read-a-thon?

A read-a-thon starts with you setting a reading goal for yourself. Decide how many books you want to read between now (February 8) and March 20, 2010.  Next, you ask people to sponsor you. That means, you tell them your reading goal and ask them to pledge a certain amount for each book that you read during the Read-a-thon.  For example, if a sponsor pledges 1 Euro per book that you read, and you read 10 books during the Read-a-thon, you will collect 10 Euros from that sponsor after the Read-a-thon is complete.  From now until March 20, READ, READ, READ! The more you read, the more money you will help to raise for earthquake relief in Haiti!  Then, between March 20 and March 27, you will go back to your sponsors with your Book Log and collect the amount they pledged times the books you read. By March 27, you should return the money you collected to your teacher, along with your Book Log and Sponsor List.

Who should I ask to sponsor me?

Ask your parents, family, friends, or neighbors.  Ask anyone you feel comfortable asking!  DO NOT ask strangers or go door-to-door asking people to sponsor you!

When should I be finished finding sponsors?

Try to find all of your sponsors during the first week of the Read-a-thon, by February 19.

When should I start reading for the Read-a-thon?

NOW!  Any book you finish during the Read-a-thon counts towards your total number, including those you started before the start of the Read-a-thon.

Where will the money I raise go?

All money raised will go to Partners in Health, a non-profit organization with over 20 years of experience working with Haitian communities.

Which kinds of books count towards the Read-a-thon?

Any book you read for German or English classes counts towards the Read-a-thon, as long as it is a "Just-Right-Book".  This means it is a book which is on your reading level - not too easy, not too hard, but just right!  All books you read must be recorded on your Book Log, and signed off by a parent or teacher.
